Ojibwe star knowledge events at Watermark Art Center
BEMIDJI, MN – Northwest Indian Community Development Center and the Miikanan Gallery at Watermark Art Center present several Ojibwe star knowledge events in early February, held at Watermark Art Center, 505 Bemidji Ave N.
The Miikanan Gallery will host the exhibit Native Skywatchers – Earth Sky Connections, opening February 5th, on display for the month of February only. This traveling art exhibit brings artists together to share compelling visual stories about multi-dimensional relationships to earth and sky. Created by the Native Skywatchers Initiative, this exhibit weaves together art, science and culture and is at the cutting edge of defining Indigenous STEM and what it means to work at the art/science nexus.
Alongside the exhibit, there will be additional programming regarding star knowledge:
As It Is Above; It Is Below: An inter-generational star map painting workshop. February 10th, 12-3 p.m. Kids 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. $10/person. Family rates available. Call Watermark to purchase tickets – cash or check only. Tel #: 218-444-7570.
Anangoog – Cultural Knowledge of the Stars: A presentation by Mishiikenh (Abe Sutherland) and Ogimaawap (Joe Sutherland) of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, who are carrying on the knowledge of their parents, Mary and Leonard Moose. Two sessions: February 17th and 18th. Presentation begins at 1 p.m. each day, with traditional storytelling to follow. Free to attend, but space is limited.
