LLBO Statement on Passing of Tribal Elder Dennis J Banks
The Tribal Council, management and staff of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Leech Lake Tribal Elder Nowacumig, Dennis Banks.
Mr. Banks was a visionary leader whose life’s work laid the foundation for the Native civil rights movement. The sacrifices he made as a founding member of the American Indian Movement put the struggles faced by Native American communities across the United States into the global spotlight.
His leadership, his foresight and his commitment towards empowering Native Americans shall forever be remembered and have a lasting impact throughout Indian Country.
We will be forever grateful for his contributions towards recognition of Native American social issues and his contributions to building a stronger native community.
All Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Government offices will be closed Friday, November 3, 2017 so staff may attend services for Mr. Banks. All Tribal Government Businesses and 24-hour programs will remain on the regular work schedule. Regular business hours will resume on Monday, November 6, 2017 at 8:00 am.
