The bond question will ask voters to approve the funding needed to construct a new intermediate grades 3-5 elementary school on the district’s current middle school and high school campus; renovate the existing elementary school into a PreK-2 school; upgrade and repair the Alternative Learning Center and District Resource Center; and make repairs and improvements at the middle school and high school.
The meeting will include refreshments beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a presentation on the referendum at 6 p.m.

Voting Information for Cass Lake-Bena School District Referendum
$37.8 million bond referendum will be on the ballot November 7
The Cass Lake-Bena School District has a $37.8 million bond referendum to address the district’s facility needs on the ballot in the Tuesday, November 7, election. The bond question will ask voters to approve the funding needed to construct a new intermediate grades 3-5 elementary school on the district’s current middle school and high school campus; repurpose the existing elementary school into a PreK-2 school; replace the oldest section of the Alternative Learning Center (ALC)/District Resource Center (DRC) and make repairs and improvements to the ALC; and make repairs and improvements at the middle school and high school.
Polling locations and hours
Hours for voting on November 7, 2017, will be from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Voters in Bena and Winnie Portage will vote at the Bena Community Center. All other voters in the district will vote at the Pike Bay Town Hall. Voters living in precincts that vote by mail in statewide elections will not receive a ballot by mail for this election. Voter registration
Voters not already registered may pre-register no later than October 17 by submitting a voter registration application to the Cass County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office, online at mnvotes.org, or at the polling place on Election Day. If registering on Election Day, proof of residency in the precinct is required.
To be eligible to register, voters of the district must be at least 18 years old on election day; a citizen of the United States; have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding election day; maintain residence at the address given on the registration form; cannot be under court-ordered guardianship in which the court has revoked the right to vote; cannot have been found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote; and if convicted of a felony, the felony sentence has been completed or the sentence has been discharged.
Absentee voting – vote early at Leech Lake Tribal Headquarters
Any eligible voter may vote by absentee ballot through November 6. Absentee ballot applications are available on the Cass Lake-Bena School District website or online here. Upon application, an absentee ballot will be mailed to the voter. Absentee ballots may be applied for and cast in person at the Leech Lake Tribal Headquarters in Cass Lake, or the Auditor-Treasurer’s Office in Walker located at the Courthouse. In addition to normal business hours, extended hours for in-person absentee voting will be available on Saturday, November 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Monday, November 6, until 5 p.m. at both locations.
To vote by absentee ballot or register through the mail, voters should return completed voter registration forms and absentee ballot applications to the Cass County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office (PO Box 3000, Walker, MN 56484) or by email to cass.voter@co.cass.mn.us. Voters sending absentee ballot applications by regular mail are encouraged to mail their application by October 26 to allow for mail delivery timeframes.
